![]() ![]() After reading the book for myself, while I do think some points made were valid, I don’t necessarily agree with most of it. This made me a little nervous waiting for my copy to arrive with Illumicrate as I’d been looking forward it for a while. However, after the book was released I started to notice many negative responses. As the newest release drew closer there was a lot of excitement, along with predictions as to what was actually going to happen. New stories, new characters, more content with the characters we already know and love. Similar to many people I was thrilled about the prospect of five books by SJM within the Prythian world. Promised to lead on to a new trilogy set in the magical world of Prythian with another novella to follow, this first novella could set the tone for whats to come… ![]() Maas and her A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy, A Court of Frost and Starlight was a much-anticipated release. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Newport digital minimalism![]() As Facebook’s presence mushroomed exponentially, Newport found himself watching and wondering, why are people so into this? ![]() Because that vendetta ended up giving him a unique perspective: While everyone else was sucked up in the ultra-connected, social media vortex, Newport maintained his distance. Well, anyone who says jealousy doesn’t serve you should speak to Newport. ![]() “Like: ‘Oh why is his company so popular? I'm not gonna give him the satisfaction of using his product.’” ![]() “There was probably a little bit of petty jealousy,” Newport says. He wasn’t exactly jazzed, then, that all of his buddies were so excited about this Zuckerberg guy’s project. One, he has always disliked listing his favorite things, and back then Facebook “was this presentation of self-fame: ‘Here’s my favorite movies, my favorite books.’” Two, he had, not long before, shut down a tech company he’d started during the dot com boom. “There was very little scary about 2004 Facebook,” he says. This was not the moral or political objection it might be today. In 2004, when Cal Newport was still an undergrad at Dartmouth, all his friends were making accounts on a new website called Facebook. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments The Peripheral by William Gibson![]() In short, you will probably be left wondering what the hell is going on for a little while, and that takes patience and commitment. There are a lot of terms the reader has to absorb – the klept, stubs, the jackpot, not to mention the idea of the peripheral, are only a few – as well as concepts associated with a different and unfamiliar world. His term, ‘homes’, from context, seems to refer to America’s Homeland Security, but it’s not until the final quarter of the novel that this is actually confirmed. ![]() Some terms are just Gibson’s winking joke: social media in Flynne’s near future is called ‘Badger’, for instance. But Gibson’s writing is fast paced, with little exposition, and with many names and terms which you need to learn from clues spread throughout the plot. That can be wonderful if you’re ready for it if you’re expecting to have to focus just a little harder for your guilty pleasure. Gibson has a reputation for throwing readers in at the deep end. I started Neuromancer years ago and found I didn’t have the patience, at that time, to immerse myself in Gibson’s world. I came to The Peripheral rather indirectly. ![]() This is despite Gibson’s reputation and his established importance to Science Fiction and cyberpunk after his first novel, Neuromancer. The Peripheral is the first William Gibson novel I’ve read. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments I, Steve by George Beahm![]() ![]() Interestingly, they are not collated by date, but by alphabetical faux headings for each quote. There are a significant number of quotations and arguably this makes up the main context of the book. With that complaint aside, we need to remember this is not a biography of Steve Jobs. The introduction is sadly lacking any substance and does little to give readers an adequate appraisal of the man upon whom the book is based on. Chapters are divided into Quotations, Milestones, End Of An Era: Steve Job’s Resignation Letter, and Citations. This collection of Steve-isms is collated and edited by George Beahm, and delivered over 169 pages and five key chapters. ![]() Whilst I personally don’t agree with publishers cashing in on the death of someone famous, this book was given to me as a gift and it turns out to be an interesting read, that is, if you like reading quotations and excepts from speeches. I, Steve: Steve Jobs In His Own Words is one of these books. Immediately following the death of Steve Jobs in October 2011, book publishers world wide started releasing a plethora of books about the much revered CEO we simply knew as Steve. ![]() ![]() ![]() |a Bed and breakfast accommodations |v Fiction. |a Jo Marie Rose opens the Rose Harbor Inn bed and breakfast in Cedar Cove in order to start a new life, but the inn and its first guests bring surprises into Jo's life. |a The inn at Rose Harbor : |b a novel / |c Debbie Macomber. |a DLC |b eng |c DLC |d IG# |d BTCTA |d BDX |d TXBXL |d OCLCO |d UPZ |d DEL |d IHI |d WIQ |d IK2 |d JP3 |d JUH |d YDXCP |d E3V ![]() 5/23/2023 0 Comments Cotillion georgette heyer plot![]() At a time where matches are made via the swipe of a screen and flirting is less about lingering looks than exchanging one-liners over WhatsApp, the early 19th century looks like an idyllic age for courtship. Some of the appeal of the genre, lies in the Regency era’s strict rules of romantic engagement. It is much as one contemporary reviewer said of Georgette Heyer, without whose Regency novels there would probably be no Bridgerton, “you don’t buy a book, you buy a world”. Bridgerton - now in its second season -is – the ultimate in frothy, escapist entertainment, transporting us away from our real-world concerns in less time than it takes to say “indeed, my Lord”. Starved of human contact and fed up with staring at our own (woefully un-gilded) four walls, the show’s decadent costumes, swoon-worthy stately piles and timeless love-v-duty storylines were bound to win us over. When Bridgerton, Netflix’s phenomenally popular period romp, first exploded on to our screens in 2021 we were in the dark days of a winter lockdown. I t doesn’t require Lady Whistledown levels of surveillance to work out why Regency romance has been getting so much love of late. ![]() ![]() Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986.
